ARCHIVED - Los Alcázares presents initial flood protection project to the Murcia government
A 2-million-euro budget for increase drainage capacity in the centre of Los Alcázares
The Town Hall of Los Alcázares continues to make the search for solutions to the problems of repeated flooding in the town centre a priority, and on Tuesday delivered to the regional government its plans for an initial project designed to reduce the severity of episodes like the five which have affected the town on the shore of the Mar Menor in only a little over three years.
Mario Cervera, the Mayor of Los Alcázares, promised that this document would be produced during a recent meeting with Fernando López Miras, the president of the Murcia government, and the project delivered has been designed with an estimated budget of 2 million euros. The work proposed includes the installation of rectangular rainwater drainage pipes measuring 2 by 1.5 metres in cross-section, which would allow the drainage flow rate to be increased to 10,000 litres per second and would connect to the drainage channel designed by the CHS water authority behind the Antonio Menárguez Costa secondary school: this is the channel into which floodwater has cascaded during “gota fría” storms and other episodes of torrential rain in recent years.
According to Sr Cervera, this is the first of various projects which the Town Hall hopes to set in motion “given the lack of action taken by other administrations”. The Mayor went on to explain that “the lives of my neighbours and the future of my town are at stake”, reiterating that putting a halt to the flooding in the area is a priority for his local government team.
