A poacher caught red-handed catching goldfinches with nets in Lorca and entrapping them in cages on the back of his truck faces up to two years locked up himself for illegal hunting.
Police suspected poaching was taking place in the El Rincón del Molino-El Garrobillo area of Lorca after discovering a double bird-catching net which appeared to be placed strategically to capture finches, so officers from the Guardia Civil's Seprona division set up a surveillance operation.
Their patience soon paid off when the suspect returned to the trapping device, which was three metres long and 1.5 metres wide and operated remotely using a rope.
Nearby were a further three cage traps and several goldfinches with food to lure other birds so they too could be captured.
On the back of the detainee's truck, Seprona officers found six goldfinches and other young birds in cages, which they released back into the wild.
The poacher was arrested and faces a prison sentence of between six months and two years or a hefty fine, and disqualification from hunting or fishing for up to three years.
