An injured common buzzard (Buteo buteo), was found alongside the Guadalentín river in Alhama de Murcia this week, and was taken to the local police station. The bird was obviously in need of medical attention, so the forestry services were notified and the bird taken to the wildlife recovery centre of the region for treatment.
These beautiful birds of prey are common in the Guadalentín Valley and are known in Spanish as “águila ratonera” or “busardo ratonero”, literally rat catching buzzards. They're not protected and are very common, although it's rare to see one this close-up.
The common buzzard is an opportunistic predator that can take a wide variety of prey, but it feeds mostly on small mammals, especially rodents such as voles.
