ARCHIVED - High-speed rail tunnel into the centre of Murcia progressing well
The first AVE trains are likely to arrive in Murcia in 2021
No exact date has yet been set for the first AVE high-speed rail services connecting the city of Murcia to the network of services in Spain, but with work progressing steadily on the tunnel which will provide access of trains to the Estación del Carmen in the south of the city expectation is growing in anticipation of testing towards the end of this year and the inauguration of passenger services in 2021.
Among the latest details to emerge is the fact that this tunnel will be equipped with emergency exits every 100 metres in the area closest to the station, and that there will be as many as seven tracks on this part of the line, four with standard gauge and three with mixed gauge. Further away from the station the frequency of the emergency exits will be only one per kilometre in the outskirts of the regional capital, such as the stretches which form part of the second phase of construction leading out of the west of the city towards Nonduermas.
Tunneling is making visible progress, then, but there is still plenty of work to be done including the construction of a whole new station. The current building, which dates from the 1860s, will remain standing and will be put to alternative uses.
