ARCHIVED - Free bus and tram travel in and around the city of Murcia while the contamination episode lasts
Every effort is being made to encourage the use of public transport
In the face of the soaring levels of PM10 particle air contamination in the city of Murcia the Town Hall has announced that bus and tram travel in and around the city is to be free of charge for the duration of the episode.
On Thursday morning Mayor José Ballesta stated that no effort would be spared in taking steps to lessen the effects of the cloud of mineral dust which has reached the Region of Murcia from Africa, and he appears to have been true to his word with this measure which is designed to encourage people to use public transport.
The free tram and bus services are not restricted to Murcia but, with the collaboration of the regional government, include routes to and from towns such as Ceutí, Molina de Segura, Santomera, Las Torres de Cotillas and Alcantarilla as well as outlying districts.
