ARCHIVED - Flu epidemic declared by Murcia government as hospital resources are reinforced
Vaccines are still available at health centres and from pharmacies all over Murcia
Following reports last week that A&E units in hospitals in the Region of Murcia, particularly at Santa Lucía in Cartagena, were suffering overcrowding due to the onset of the annual flu epidemic, the department of Health in the regional government confirmed on Monday that epidemic level has been reached following a ten-fold increase last week in the number of cases reported.
The rate of incidence rose after Three Kings Day to 67 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (the threshold is considered to be 55) and a total of 21 patients were admitted to hospital, although at present no fatalities have been reported due to flu-related complications of already existing conditions. On Monday morning a total of 46 people were awaiting admission at the Arrixaca hospital in El Palmar, far more than on a “normal” day, and in response to staffing resources being stretched 150 more medics have been taken on and 150 extra beds are being made available.
In announcing the reinforcements the department of Health also reminded members of the public that flu vaccinations are still available at public health centres throughout Murcia and can also be purchased over the counter at pharmacies for just a few euros.
Last winter around 20,000 cases of flu were diagnosed in the Region, only half the figure for the year before, and 57 patients died from flu-related complications to already existing conditions.
