ARCHIVED - Five arrested for stealing 3.3 million pieces of medical protection in Madrid
Masks and gloves worth 700,000 euros were stolen
The National Police has detained five men who allegedly stole 3.3 million health protection products, valued at 700,000 euros, from a health service storage warehouse in Leganés, to sell them on the black market.
Among the items stolen were 2,400,000 pairs of gloves, 800,000 surgical masks and 100,000 FFP2 masks.
The five arrested, all of Spanish nationality and between 35 and 52 years old, have a history of similar crimes, according to police sources.
The investigation began in the middle of last August, when several people accessed a warehouse in the Madrid town of Leganés, from which 40 pallets of sanitary protection material were stolen, the thieves using a large truck to remove the materials.
Subsequent investigatiosn revealed that the stolen sanitary material was hidden in a warehouse in the industrial estate of the town of Fuenlabrada.
In a subsequent raid the police recovered practically all of the stolen material and arrested four of the alleged perpetrators.
Days later they were able to locate and arrest a fifth person.
The detainees allegedly intended to sell the material stolen on the black market to companies and businesses and had arranged several transactions in advance before “stealing to order”.
