ARCHIVED - First international cruise ship visits Cartagena after 16 month absence
The AIDA Perla arrived at the Port of Cartagena from Malaga on Wednesday, July 14 before setting sail for Barcelona.
The "AIDA Perla" became the first international cruise vessel to visit the port of Cartagena on Wednesday July 14, for 16 months, due to the disruption caused by the Covid pandemic.
On June 20th cruising resumed in the port with the arrival of the Mein Schiff 2, operated by TUI, but this vessel is only travelling between Spanish ports and is not visiting any international ports in order to ensure that passengers are maintained within a secure, controlled environment. Initially eight Spanish coastal cruises have been planned for the Mein Schiff 2 in this current cruising season.
Mayoress Noelia Arroyo was on hand to welcome the Perla for the first of eight stopovers planned for the Port of Cartagena over the summer and autumn by German shipping company AIDA Cruises.
33 other stop-offs are scheduled for Cartagena this year, which is only a fraction of the normal level of cruise activity in the port, but is a welcome improvement on the figure for last year which was zero, due to the pandemic.
In 2019 Cartagena welcomed 167 cruise ships, and 257,000 passengers, who contributed an estimated nine million euros to the local economy, and for several years the council has been working with the Port Authority to develop the sector further.
This year the Covid situation is obviously changing the way in which tours are being conducted and on this occasion passengers were able to visit the tourist attractions of the city in smaller bubble groups, with a total of up to 318 people (out of nearly 1,500 passengers) included in the tours.
Later in the day the AIDA Perla continued the remainder of its journey with Barcelona its next destination before returning to Palma de Mallorca.
The ship is set to return to Cartagena in fourteen days on its next trip.
