ARCHIVED - Fight to keep algae at bay in Santiago de la Ribera
Five teams of six people have been contracted to clear algal growth from the beaches
With beaches re-opening this week as part of phase 2, pressure on local councils to present well-maintained and attractive beaches for potential visitors has increased, nowhere more than in the Mar Menor where the inevitable algal bloom that was expected to follow the Gota Fría of September last year and the incidents of heavy rain this spring has manifested.
It first started to show on the beaches of Lo Pagán in San Pedro del Pinatar before the Covid lockdown, with just a few threads of green visible on the rocks crossing the boundaries into San Javier.
But during lockdown and with no-one to clear it away, it has spread along the shallow fringes of the coast, now visible in Los Alcázares and Cartagena, all of which have beaches within the 70 square kilometre saltwater expanse, the largest in Europe.
Yesterday the regional government reacted to harsh criticism and sent 90 people into the four municipalities to drag the algae out of the water and clear the areas nearest to the shore so that bathers would be able to enter the water unimpeded, following complaints that rotting vegetation was creating unpleasant odours as well as unattractive deposits of foam.
Click this link to read a full report about what is going on at the moment and why the regional government has been forced to take this measure, published yesterday.
Six teams of five people have been allocated to San Javier for 15 days of work and could be seen on the shoreline and in the water yesterday clearing the algae by hand.
Santiago de la Ribera has considerably less algae than neighbouring San Pedro del Pinatar, but the main problem lies away from the shore where a green tinge can clearly be seen further out, indicating that the algae is spreading.
It must be stressed that bathing is safe. The latest water composition tests confirm that technically the quality of the water is safe for bathing and the algae is not toxic, just unpleasant.
