The much-loved May parade will once again feature in the Murcia town's celebrations

<span style='color:#780948'>ARCHIVED</span> - Fiesta de Los Mayos in Alhama de Murcia brings back concerts and parade: May 6-8

Performers will return to the streets of Alhama de Murcia as part of the traditional Corremayos Parade, a hugely popular feature of the town's Fiesta de Los Mayos which will be held from May 6 to 8.

Following the relaxation of anti-Covid restrictions, concerts also make a return to the fiesta of regional tourist interest, promising three days of fun for all the family.

Central to the festival itself are the mayos, puppets characterised by objects or costumes from local customs and important historical scenes. They are set up in streets, parks and squares turning Alhama into a veritable open-air ethnographic museum on Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

And adding vibrancy to the streets, locals and visitors parade dressed as "corremayos", a multicoloured costume adorned with bells.

The pandemic forced the cancellation of the traditional parades, craft market and concerts for the last two years, and whilst they will make a welcome return, the 'Encunetro de Cuadrillas' (Meeting of the Crews) will not be going ahead.

Here are a few of the festival highlights:

Friday May 6, 8pm: Children's theatre performance at the Tierno Galván municipal auditorium.

Friday May 6, 9.45pm: XXI Alhama Folk Concert 2022 in the atrium of San Lázaro Church.

Saturday May 7: Traditional corremayos parade will depart from the Plaza de la Constitución to the Parque de La Cubana), where the group Despistaos will perform and the DJ festival MayFest will make its return.

Saturday May 7, 9pm: Presentation to a group of volunteers from the Civil Protection for their "great work and contribution to the Fiesta de Los Mayos" at Alhama Town Hall.
