ARCHIVED - Face-to-face consultations with specialist doctors suspended in Murcia Region
Pressure continues to increase as covid hospital admissions reach highest point to date
Pressure on the Murcian Health Service, the SMS, continues to grow by the hour as the number of coronavirus cases diagnosed increases.
During the last 24 hours a further 57 patients have been hospitalised in the region, bringing the total of those with more severe covid cases requiring hospital treatment to 640, with the number in intensive care rising to 103.
This is the largest number of patients suffering from coronavirus admitted to the SMS at any time since the first cases were detected in the region in March last year.
There are also 13,776 patients with mild cases in isolation, and many more in preventative quarantine, some of whom will develop more severe symptoms and require hospital treatment within the next 2 weeks.
Although further wards have been opened in order to make additional capacity available, this does mean redirecting staff resources to cope with the rising demand, so non-urgent surgical procedures have been cancelled across the region.
On Friday afternoon it was announced that face-to-face consultations with specialist doctors has also been suspended for at least two weeks, except for a very limited number of urgent consultations.
Spokesperson for the Covid Monitoring Committee in the Region, Jaime Pérez, has also confirmed that all outpatient consultations in hospitals will become telematic for the moment in order to minimise the risk to both consultant and patient.
