article_detailARCHIVED ARTICLEARCHIVED - Every Saturday: free guided visits of Totana church tower and museum
The Torre de la Iglesia de Santiago has been converted into a museum about the church
The tower of the Iglesia de Santiago El Mayor in Totana has been converted into a museum on five levels, and can be visited free of charge on Saturdays throughout the year.
A minimum of five people is required for the visit to take place, so the tourist office requests that anyone interested in coming along makes a booking in advance. The tours are run by volunteers, and the majority only speak Spanish, so if English speaking visitors are interested in visiting the tower, then a group can be formed with an English speaking guide.
Bookings by calling 968 41 81 53. emailing turismo@totana.es or in person at the tourist information office.
The tours are at 10.00.
The first level is home to the “sala capitular” which refers to the act of capitulation ending 500 years of Moorish occupation and handing over the lands of Totana to the Orden de Santiago. The second level is the choir of the church and is an excellent point from which to view the striking Mudéjar roof of the church, and also holds information abiout the chapels within the church. The third level is known as the “cuarto de los novios”, and was the former lodgings of the bellman, and holds the former church clock, which marked out the sounds of everyday life in the town. The fourth floor cannot currently be visited as it houses the working clock mechanism still in use today, and on the fifth level visitors finally reach the bell tower, which contains the second oldest bell in the whole of the Cartagena Diocese, dating back to 1470 and offers magnificent views across the surrounding countryside.
