ARCHIVED - Drunk motorist causes mayhem on Murcia motorway driving in wrong direction and crashing into another car
Another driver crashed into a kilometre marking on the RM-3 motorway in Mazarrón to avoid a collision

A woman is currently under police investigation for reckless driving after leaving a trail of destruction in her wake when she sped along the RM-3 (Totana to Mazarrón) in the wrong direction while almost three times the legal alcohol limit.
Mayhem unfolded on Friday night, March 17, when the Murcia Guardia Civil's Traffic Operations Centre (COTA) was informed of a road accident on the RM-3 near Mazarrón, in which three vehicles were involved.
A Lorca Traffic Unit was sent to the scene and verified two cars had collided and a third car had hit a kilometre marker to avoid crashing into the other vehicles. One person was injured and all of the cars were damaged.
According to police sources, the person under investigation had "improperly joined the RM-3 motorway from the exit of Urbanización Camposol", driving in the direction of Totana in the wrong lanes until the Condado de Alhama exit.
During this hair-raising 2km journey, she collided with another car travelling correctly, slightly injuring the other driver. The driver of the third vehicle that had to make an evasive manoeuvre was unhurt.
Two of the vehicles involved were removed from the motorway by roadside assistance cranes. The third was drivable.
The female driver showed "obvious symptoms of having consumed alcohol" and was breathalysed. She gave positive results of 0.73 and 0.67 milligrams, almost three times the limit of 0.25 mg/litre.
She has been charged as the alleged perpetrator of two offences against road safety: one for driving in a manifestly reckless manner (in the wrong direction on a motorway) endangering the lives or integrity of other road users; and the other for driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
Investigations are ongoing ahead of a court hearing.
