ARCHIVED - Drugs found in the schoolbags of 13-year-olds during sniffer dog demonstration at Marbella school
Unexpected results after the demonstration was moved indoors due to rain in the Costa del Sol!
An exhibition to demonstrate the abilities of police sniffer dogs at a secondary school in Marbella produced unexpected results last month, according to reports which have surfaced in the national press, when small quantities of hashish were detected in the school bags of three students, all of whom were promptly expelled for 20 days.
This incident occurred on 20th November at the Las Dunas de las Chapas school during an event which had been organized and approved by the staff of the centre. However, the schedule had to be modified and altered from a demonstration in the playground to classroom visits on account of the rain which fell that day, the intention being not to deprive children of the chance to meet and greet the highly trained dogs and take part in some of their exercises.
But to the surprise of the officers accompanying the sniffer dogs - and of the staff, who report that this is not a “problematic” school - three rucksacks were singled out by the visiting canine detectives and small quantities of drugs were found inside. The students were in the first and second years of compulsory secondary education, meaning that they were between 12 and 14 years old, and their parents were informed immediately.
Officers explain that they always take a small amount of hashish with them for demonstrations of this kind, but that of course their dogs’ sense of smell and their extreme training cannot be deactivated!
The case has caused a variety of reactions, mostly concerning disappointment and surprise that children so young should be buying illegal drugs and indeed that they should have the money at their disposal to do so, but unidentified sources are presenting the incident as an organized raid of which only the headmistress and the head of studies had any knowledge beforehand. One outraged mother is even quoted in El País as complaining that “my daughter had no idea what hashish was, but she does now”!
