ARCHIVED - Downward curve of Covid cases continues in Spain but another 337 fatalities reported
The target incidence rate will not be reached at least until the New Year
The latest coronavirus data published by Spain’s Ministry of Health on Thursday evening report 12,289 new confirmed cases, 5,073 of them in the last 24 hours, bringing the total across the country since February to 1,617,355, and also confirm a further 337 fatalities related to Covid-19.
Frightening though the figures are, with the death toll having reached 44,374, they do at least continue to show a gradual downward curve in the second wave of contagion, the incidence rate over the last 14 days having fallen to 325.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Nonetheless, the target of reducing that rate to 50 or below is still a distant one, and Fernando Simón of the Ministry’s Emergency Coordination Centre warns that it will not be reached before January or February at the earliest.
In the meantime, it is encouraging to at last be able to detect a lessening of the strain on hospitals, with the number of Covid patients admitted for treatment falling in all 17 regions of Spain, although the situation is still described as “extremely worrying”. As yet the drop in hospital admissions has not been reflected in a significant decrease in the number of patients in intensive care units or in the number of fatalities, and this may continue to be the case for a few more weeks.
