ARCHIVED - Down Syndrome associations plant new trees at Terra Natura Murcia wildlife park
The Town Hall aims to double the number of trees in Murcia to 200,000
As part of the on-going initiative by the Town Hall of Murcia to plant more trees throughout the municipality an event was held on Monday morning in which 22 members of various Down Syndrome charity groups took part in a planting at the Terra Natura Murcia wildlife park in the northern outskirts of the city.
The Town Hall is planting approximately 2,000 trees around Terra Natura and the organizations taking part on Monday included Aspapros, Fundown, Astrapace, Assido and Astrade. On a wider scale the intention is to double the number of trees in Murcia to 200,000 in an effort to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis, but at Terra Natura the participants were entierely focussed on their own contribution as they planted five Aleppo pines, five bottletrees and 10 Mediterranean hackberries, each of them eventually growing to between 3 and 4 metres high.
As part of the Plan Foresta initiative other plantings are currently under way in the city districts of San Pedro, San Antolín and San Nicolás.
It is worth remembering that each tree planted absorbs up to 150 kilos of CO2 per year, acting as an excellent filter for urban pollutants and small particles and thus improving the environment and providing beneficial effects for public health. At the same time, of course, they provide shade and respite from the summer heat in the 4 million or so square metres of green areas in Murcia, containing over 116,000 trees belonging to 210 species.
