ARCHIVED - Ding-dong between Los Alcázares Town Hall and regional government as 36 potentially illegal boat moorings are investigated
The Mayor of Los Alcázares complains that the regional president is avoiding meeting him
Miriam Pérez, the head of the Department of the Mar Menor in the regional government of Murcia, informed members of the press on Tuesday that inspectors working for the department had detected 36 potentially illegally moored boats in the lagoon off the beaches of Los Alcázares, and has passed the information on to the Town Hall along with photographic evidence so that appropriate action can be taken to remove them from the water.
The importance of this matter lies in the fact that illegal moorings are held to be one of the factors responsible for the deterioration of the marine environment in the Mar Menor, although far from the most important, and in the light of the recent acceleration in that deterioration since the flooding caused by the gota fría storm in September the government is making great efforts to be seen to be addressing the problem. In this context the information given by Sra Pérez regarding the latest water quality readings are arguably more important, and they provide grounds for only limited optimism.
It is perhaps interesting to note that all 36 of the possibly illegal moorings were found in the municipality of Los Alcázares, where Mayor Mario Pérez Cervera of the PSOE party has been complaining that he has not been granted a meeting with Fernando López Miras, the president of the PP-led regional government. Sr Pérez Cervera reports that it is over 110 days since he requested a meeting on 8th August, and even after the gota fría caused disastrous flood damage in Los Alcázares no time has been made available for him to discuss various matters with the president, including the need to enlarge the local secondary school, the implementation of vocational training programs, extending the opening hours of the local health centre and the construction of a new primary school.
No doubt since the storm in September the list of topics to be addressed has been lengthened, but the Mayor reports that he continues to await confirmation of when a meeting might take place.
