Death toll from Valencia floods rises to 220
Eight people are still missing nearly a month after devastating storm
The death toll from the catastrophic floods in Valencia on October 29 has risen to 220, following the discovery of a woman’s body in the town of Torrent. Eight people remain missing nearly a month after the storm first struck the region.
According to Spain’s Data Integration Centre (CID), the latest updated figures as of Wednesday November 20 confirms that all but one of the deceased have been identified. Identification methods included fingerprints, DNA analysis and hospital records.
The floods, which are among the deadliest in recent memory, have left forensic teams at Valencia’s Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) working tirelessly to complete autopsies and identifications. The CID’s daily report noted no new identifications on November 20, though one additional autopsy was carried out.
Efforts to locate the missing and bring closure to affected families continue as authorities balance recovery with disaster prevention measures for the future.
After weeks of travel disruption, the rail connection between Valencia and Alicante finally has a deadline for when it will reopen – on December 22.
