ARCHIVED - DANA brings torrential rain and scorching temperatures to Spain: Wednesday August 10
The storms will be confined to the north of Spain as the mercury continues to climb in the south
Wednesday August 10 is set to be another scorcher throughout Spain, with temperatures as high as 40ºC in areas like Cordoba and Granada, but what meteorologists are really looking out for is the arrival of a DANA – an isolated depression at high levels – which is expected to sweep across the north and leave strong storms in its wake.
Heavy showers developing into deluges are forecast to hit the north-west of the country on Wednesday, which may extend further north and even make its ways towards the south, depending on how the weather front develops throughout the day. There will be no let-up in temperatures, however, and 10 regions (Andalucia, Aragon, Balearic Islands, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia Extremadura, Community of Madrid, Navarra and La Rioja) remain on yellow alert for extreme heat. The Basque Country has been issued with an orange warning.
In the Mediterranean area and in the extreme south of the peninsula, the day will be a little cloudy overall while the Andalucian Atlantic coast and the north and east of the Canary Islands will be generally overcast. Some morning mist is forecast for inland Valencia and most of the south can expect a hazy start to the day.
The mercury will continue on its upward trajectory in the south, exceeding 35ºC quite easily in most areas.
According to Aemet, this summer Spain can expect an average of 25 days of heatwaves, and although this is fewer than the scalding summer of 2003 (32 days), the heat episodes we’re experiencing now are far more extreme. This July was the warmest Spain has seen in 61 years and the quarter covering May, June and July was the hottest since 1916.
