ARCHIVED - Covid incidence drops for fourth consecutive week: Spain update August 10
This average figure has dropped by almost 1,000 points in Spain in the last month
Spain looks to finally be exiting the seventh wave of the coronavirus pandemic with the health data steadily declining week on week. The incidence rate in the most vulnerable age groups has fallen by around 1,000 points in the last month, and hospital pressure has also dropped consistently.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health registered 26,188 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday August 9. This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,280,557.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has dropped for the fourth consecutive week to stand at 336.05 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the 395.83 infections registered last Friday.
This is almost one thousand points less than a month ago.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 512.19 cases, followed by septuagenarians (347), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (236.26). The incidence rate in all of these age groups has steadily declined in recent days.
The 7-day incidence also continues to decline, going from 159 cases to 134, which indicates that the number of infections should continue to drop in the coming days.
Andalucia continues to be the community with the lowest incidence rate by far, a trend which it has maintained throughout the seventh wave (180.52 cases). Every region has now dropped below the 800-case threshold.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Hospital admissions have seen another decrease, with 6,043 people admitted on Tuesday (1,793 fewer than on the same day last week, while 392 patients are being treated for more serious conditions in Spain’s ICUs (a reduction of 39).
This Tuesday, 4.6% of all intensive care beds were occupied by Covid patients.
Despite the general decrease in occupancy in the ICUs, the figures are still far too high in several communities, as is the case in Madrid (9%) or Catalonia (7.5%). In addition, the Canary Islands , Navarra and the Basque Country (6.2%) and Castilla-La Mancha (5.7%) all exceed the national average.
In the last week, another 222 Covid-related fatalities have been recorded across Spain.
Vaccination data
As of August 10, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,135,358 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,253,485 have received at least one dose, 93.1% of the population over 12 years of age.
