ARCHIVED - Coronavirus restrictions bring the crime rate in Spain down by 20 per cent
41 per cent fewer thefts reported in the first nine months of 2020
More than eight months after the declaration of the first national state of emergency in Spain due to the coronavirus pandemic more data continue to emerge illustrating the far-reaching effects of Covid-19 on the country, and although most of the consequences are negative some crumbs of comfort can be found among the plethora of statistics.
One of these is a fall of 20.2 per cent in the crime rate (including both “offences” and “crimes”, two different terms in Spanish) during the first nine months of 2020 in comparison with the same period last year, according to the figures published this Thursday by the Ministry of the Interior. This decrease can be attributed in large part to the restrictions on people’s movements which have been in place at different times since mid-March, with the sharpest falls being observed in the categories of theft (-41.4 per cent), robbery with violence and intimidation (-27.1 per cent) and breaking and entry and burglaries (-26.8 per cent).
The Ministry is not hesitant in underlining the link between coronavirus restrictions and the crime rate, with other falls noted in sex crimes (-12.2 per cent), kidnapping (-14.1 per cent), causing actual bodily harm (-17.3 per cent) and manslaughter (-6.8 per cent), although on the other hand the number of attempted homicides is the only category to show an increase (of 15.6 per cent).
