ARCHIVED - Coronavirus recoveries in Murcia double to 90 but first doctor dies in the region
The number of patients in hospital falls slightly but there is no room for complacency in observing the lockdown
The daily evening update on the coronavirus pandemic in Murcia on Thursday evening revealed that a further 61 cases of Covid-10 have been confirmed in the Region while four more fatalities during the day took the total up to 46, but at the same time the number of recoveries doubled from 45 to 90.
In addition, there was more relief for the overstretched resources of the health service as the number of patients admitted to hospital remained almost exactly the same rather than increasing, dropping by just 3 to 284, with 57 of them currently in intensive care. In overall terms the Region of Murcia continues at the foot of the list of Spanish regions in terms of deaths associated with the virus, and also has the second lowest infection rate behind the Canary Islands, although this last statistic is doubtless distorted by the low number of tests carried out in the Costa Cálida.
So far a total of 1,145 cases have been confirmed in Murcia, of which 1,009 are still active, 12 more than on Wednesday evening.
As ever, though, the minister for Health in the regional government, Manuel Villegas, is keen to stress that the positive side to the latest data must in no way lead to complacency in observing the lockdown restrictions. He points out that if the upward curve in the number of infections and fatalities is indeed flattening slightly, as the figures suggest, it is due not to the natural development of the epidemic but due to the restrictions on movement being observed by members of the public, and if people begin to flout those restrictions the spread of the virus will resume.
The seriousness of the situation was underlined on Friday morning when it emerged that a 59 year old doctor working in the Quirón hospital in Murcia had become the latest Coronabirus victim. The deceased suffered from pre-existing medical conditions.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
