ARCHIVED - Cartagena hotels close to being booked out this December holiday
Many hoteliers in the Murcia municipality of Cartagena hope to hang ‘no vacancy’ signs over the weekend
With the first bank holiday of the month on our doorstep, hoteliers in Cartagena are anticipating a more than promising weekend, particularly between Saturday December 4 and Monday December 6, an encouraging indication that the economy, and in particular the hospitality industry, is making a come-back.
The Councillor for Tourism in Cartagena has confirmed that hotel and catering bookings are up and that the current reservations indicate that the municipality could reach 90% hotel occupancy, while the director of the Los Habaneros hotel even expects many business owners to have to hang ‘no vacancy’ signs on their premises.
The forecasts are very welcome given that many in the industry feared that the advance of the Omicron variant may negatively impact the hotel and hospitality sectors in the run-up to Christmas.
While bookings are expected to fall on Tuesday and Wednesday as people prepare to return to work after the long weekend, the average occupancy over the five days is still expected to reach 70%. Coupled with the fine weather forecast, the fifth edition of the MAMBA international basketball tournament, which brings together 600 players from 12 countries, is also expected to draw crowds to Cartagena.
Cultural pursuits have now reached almost 75% of their pre-pandemic level, with the Roman Theatre Museum, the Castle of the Concepcion and the Tourist Boat topping the list of tourist favourites.
Hotels in the Region of Murcia registered a decrease of only 9.1% in October compared with the same month in 2019, and many studies actually suggest that reservations over the December bridge in Cartagena, La Manga and the rest of the Mar Menor area could be 20% higher than two years ago.
