ARCHIVED - Calls for extra police presence in Denia amid spiraling street parties
There's been a notable rise in the number of parties at holiday flats, in the streets and on beaches in the Marina Alta town, Alicante province
Heightened concerns over safety in Denia prompted a meeting of three residents' groups and the local police last week, in which calls were made for extra police presence to tackle a rise in parties in the street, known as 'botellones' in Spanish, in rented holiday apartments and on the beaches.
The Association of Neighbours of the Montgó highlighted the nuisance caused by rowdy gatherings at tourist rental flats, and consequent disturbances as people make their way into the street, particularly in the urbanisation La Siesta.
The continued street drinking and littering following the relaxation of anti-Covid restrictions has also plagued the Les Roques neighbourhood, and the residents' association reiterated the calls for more police on the streets.
But whilst the Local Police Commissioner acknowledged botellones are a problem, he stressed that everything possible is being done to control the parties, and that "many interventions have been carried out".
The possibility of a new police station was raised by the Les Deveses--Platges Nord association, but the chief of police said the number of patrols carried out in the area on a daily basis had increased since the beginning of "a hectic summer season in which police staff were overloaded". He did not, however, rule out the option.
Over the weekend, Denia Local Police were called to a number of fights and disturbances, including one incident in which a forty-seven-year-old man had part of his ear bitten off during an altercation shortly after 1am on Sunday October 3, at a pub.
A total of five people were injured in the fight at the bar in Calle Mar, although it's not clear if any arrests have been made.
