ARCHIVED - Brussels announces pre-agreement with Biontech and Pfizer to reserve 200 million doses of anticovid vaccine
On Wednesday the Oxford vaccine trials were suspended
The European Commission announced on Wednesday a pre-agreement with the pharmaceutical companies Biontech and Pfizer to reserve a total of 200 million doses of their potential vaccine against the coronavirus on behalf of the 27 EU purchasing block, of which Spain is a partner.
The aim is thus to advance the bases of the contractual framework between the parties to initially purchase 200 million doses if the vaccine is achieved, a purchase that would take place on behalf of the member states and that could be extended to another 100 million doses if proven that the vaccine is safe and effective against Covid-19.
In addition, part of these vaccines will be donated to low and middle income countries and will be redistributed through the External Action Service, as Brussels has foreseen in other similar agreements.
Last August, the Community Executive already announced two contracts with the pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson to acquire a total of 500 million doses of the future vaccine against the coronavirus.
The purchasing block is also in advanced conversations with Sanofi-GSK, Curevac and Moderna.
On Wednesday one of the vaccine options, the Oxford vaccine, ran into problems when trials were suspended; this will delay the roll-out of the vaccine in Spain. On Monday it had been announced that Spain could expect to receive 3 million doses of the vaccine in December, but this will now be delayed.
