ARCHIVED - Breakdown of Murcia Covid-19 cases by municipality up to 6th April
Figures are likely to rise substantially this week with the introduction of more extensive testing
The latest coronavirus statistics issued on Monday evening by the health service of the Region of Murcia (SMS) brought both good news and bad news, with a decrease in the number of confirmed active cases (although that could soon be cancelled out by the introduction of far more extensive testing) but another 10 fatalities bringing the total so far up to 78.
Until now it has been difficult to take the data in Murcia regarding confirmed cases at face value, but even so, within the limitations of the testing campaign until now, the latest news does suggest that the lockdown is beginning to work in halting the spread of the pandemic. The number of people in intensive care in the Region has fallen slowly over the last week from 59 to 51, while the total of those admitted to hospital has remained steady at just under 300.
IT IS FAR TOO EARLY TO STATE THAT THE PANDEMIC IS ON THE WANE IN MURCIA, a point reiterated once again by Manuel Villegas, the minister for Health in the regional government on Monday. Obeying the lockdown restrictions is as vital as ever if the situation is to be brought under control sooner rather than later, and while at present there are still sufficient hospital beds for those requiring them saturation point is still uncomfortably close.
Meanwhile, the limited testing data compiled show that the municipalities in which most cases have been confirmed are, unsurprisingly, those of Murcia with 527 (almost a third of the population of the region live in the municipality) and Cartagena with 149. There are 59 cases confirmed so far in Molina de Segura, 48 in Santomera, 42 in Cieza and 40 in Yecla, with the full list published on Monday being as follows:
Murcia 527 (at a cumulative incidence rate or CI of 116.3 per 100,000 inhabitants)

Molina de Segura 59
Santomera 48 (the highest CI of 296.2)
Cieza 42

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
