Back seat birth: Marbella police help deliver baby girl on the spot

National Police officers step in when baby decides not to wait for the hospital

A baby girl made a very early entrance into the world this week with the help of three quick-thinking police officers on the streets of Marbella.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, around 2.25am, a National Police patrol was passing along Avenida Severo Ochoa when they noticed a car stopped in the road and a man pacing nearby, clearly distressed. The 36-year-old, originally from Ukraine, couldn’t explain in Spanish what was happening, but he quickly managed to signal that his partner was about to give birth in the car.

The officers acted immediately. They found the woman in the back seat in obvious discomfort and it soon became clear that there was no time to get her to hospital. The baby's head was already beginning to appear.

With calm reassurance, one officer took the lead in helping with the delivery, while the others gave support and offered guidance in English from outside the vehicle. Working together, they encouraged the mother to breathe through the contractions and to push. Just moments later, the baby was safely delivered and let out her first cry.

An ambulance arrived shortly afterwards, and paramedics took over. The umbilical cord was cut, and both mum and baby were gently transferred to hospital for checks. Thankfully, they’re both doing well.

Despite the language barrier and the unexpected circumstances, the officers helped turn what could have been a frightening experience into a joyful one. One of the attending officials described it as a “positive resolution” - a happy ending for a mid-week Marbella night.
