ARCHIVED - At least 58 migrants heading for the Canaries die as boat capsizes off Mauritania
83 survivors managed to swim ashore after the boat hit a reef close to the African coast
At least 58 African migrants are reported to have died when the small boat on which they were attempting to travel from Mauritania to the Canaries capsized while still close to the western African coast.
The vessel capsized close to the town of Nouadhibou, the second largest city in Mauritania, and 83 survivors were rescued after managing to swim ashore. It was they who reported the details of the tragedy, including the fact that at least three women and one child are among the dead, and ten of them are reported to be in serious condition, according to the Minister of the Interior in the Mauritanian government.
The boat set sail last Thursday from Gambia with between 150 and 180 people on board, most of them from Gambia and Senegal and aged between 20 and 30. Up to 40 people remain unaccounted for and are expected to be added to the list of fatalities after the boat hit a reef and overturned, leaving the passengers to literally sink or swim.
The survivors have been taken to Nouadhibou and given food, water, blankets and medical attention where required.
