ARCHIVED - Weekly street markets to resume in Cartagena from May 11th
Markets will be scaled-down to start with and traders must observe strict hygiene controls
From 11th May phase 1 of the Covid de-escalation plan comes into effect, one of the elements of this being the possibility that street markets may once again resume trading.
Whether they do so or not is a decision for each individual municipal council, of which there are 45 in this region, and each will make a decision based on its own local situation.
These decisions will not all be made before the 11th May, so be patient, further information will be published about individual municipalities as it becomes available.
The Cartagena municipal council has taken the decision to allow a partial return to normality in its municipality and will begin its de-escalation process by allowing only the market vendors selling fruit, vegetables and perishable produce to re-open.
The council justifies its decision saying that these vendors lost the most money when the state of emergency was declared as they were forced to throw away most of their stock.
It is also easier to hygienically control the sale of their products than it is, for example, for ítems of clothing, given that the virus is easily transmitted through cloth.
The following weekly markets will resume next week in the Cartagena municipality (only those held on an annual basis, not the summer markets) , both in the main urban area of the city and outlying districts, with strict distancing between stalls, vendors issued with handwash, gloves and masks and will ONLY comprise food stalls between 11th and 24th May, phase 1:
.
Barrio Peral.
. Barriada San Cristóbal.
. Cabo de Palos (Sunday).
. El Algar.
. El Llano del Beal.
. La Aljorra.
. La Palma.
. Pozo Estrecho.
. Los Dolores.
. Ribera de San Javier.
. Urbanización Mediterráneo.
. Los Belones.
