ARCHIVED - The gota fría storm made September 2019 the third wettest month on record in Murcia
Numerous rainfall records were broken as severe flooding affected much of the Costa Cálida
Anyone who was in Murcia between 12th and 15th September, when a large isolated high altitude depression brought torrential “gota fría” storms to the Cost Cálida, will not be surprised to learn that the State meteorological agency Aemet’s summary of the month reveals it to have been the wettest September on record in the Region and the third wettest month ever since comparable data were first compiled in 1941 (behind April 1946 and December 2016).
The average rainfall during the 30 days, taking into account all parts of the Region, was 173 millimetres, with the wettest of the Aemet weather stations being those in Molina de Segura (374 millimetres) and La Manga del Mar Menor (335 millimetres). On 12th September Cartagena, Cieza, Murcia and Alcantarilla all recorded more rain than ever before in just one day, with between 140 and 180 millimetres, while in San Javier the figure of 204 mm was second only to a massive cloudburst in November 1987.
As a result, the hydrological year of 2018-19, which ended on 30th September, was the fourth wettest on record in the Region of Murcia, with the average total of 472 millimetres being the highest since 1987-98. Not that this means that the reservoirs of the Segura basin are full, or even half full: most of the rain fell on the low ground near the coast rather than further inland where the reservoirs are located, and as of 30th September they are still at only 28.16 per cent of capacity!
In terms of temperatures during the month of September, the mean of 22.6ºC in the Region of Murcia was 0.3 degrees higher than the historical average, due mainly to high night-time minimums, with the highest reading of 36.6 degrees having been recorded on 1st September in Archena.
