ARCHIVED - Testing reveals new cases in the Murcia Region on Monday
On Wednesday the regional government is set to decide whether the region will move on to phase 1 of the de-escalation plan on 11th May

Murcia still has the lowest number of cases of any region in Spain and hospitalisations are stable
Total active cases: 534
Total cases: 2051 (1496 diagnosed by PCR 555 using rapid tester)
Hospitalised: 69
Intensive care: 17
Home isolation: 465
Fatalities: 136 (2 new deaths in the last 24 hours)
Cured 1381 (104 new cured in the last 24 hours)
Increased testing in the Murcia Region has “discovered” 81 new Covid-19 positives during the last 24 hours, pushing the number of cases in the Murcia Region past the 2,000 mark to a total of 2051 positive diagnoses since the first case was discovered on 8th March.
Of these, only 9 are “new” cases, the remainder positive tests from amongst those who had called the helpline with mild Covid symptoms and it had previously been impossible to test due to the lack of tester kits.
Last week the regional health authorities began to “play catch-up” following the delivery of a batch of fully functioning rapid tester kits and the decision of the national government to requisition the service of private laboratories to undertake more extensive PCR testing, a situation which has only been possible due to the application of the state of emergency which gives these powers to the national government.
104 individuals were removed from the active cases list yesterday, bringing the number of cured to 1381 in total, and unfortunately two further fatalities were added to the list, bringing that total up to 136.
The situation in the region’s hospitals is stable, with 17 individuals in intensive care and 69 hospitalised, nearly than half of them in private hospitals.
Murcia remains the mainland autonomous community with the lowest number of cases and deaths, and the lowest percentage of cases per 100,00 inhabitants in Spain.
Murcia has just 3.48 cases per 100,000 head of population, way below the national average of 50.99.

On Wednesday the regional government will decide if the Murcia Region will enter phase 1 of the de-escalation process on May 11th
Tomorrow the regional government will take its decision about whether the region will move onto phase 1 of the national de-escalation plan, which gives greater liberty to its residents and enables some businesses to resume activities, albeit at a reduced level. The regional government of Murcia has been very cautious in its approach to de-escalation, favouring a slower de-escalation that that laid out by the national government last week, and has already requested that phase 1 be delayed by an extra week to ensure that the virus is under control.
The neighbouring provinces of Alicante and Albacete both have considerably higher levels of cases than the Murcia region and the regional president has been steadfast in his refusal to “hurry things along”.
“If we’ve learned one thing about this virus, “he said, it’s that it’s unpredictable and we still know very little about it.”
Residents are hopeful that the region will enter phase 1, allowing passengers to join the driver in private cars, and bars to open to 50% of their outdoor terrace capacity.
