ARCHIVED - Spanish navy Special Forces unit marches 100 km to deliver Christmas charity donation in Caravaca
Each man carried 10 kilos of food in his backpack along with the rest of his kit
The Spanish navy’s Special Naval Warfare Force has made an extraordinary Christmas donation of a ton of food for the needy to Cáritas in Caravaca de la Cruz, delivering their contribution to the Santuario de la Vera Cruz after yomping with it in their rucksacks all the way across the Region of Murcia.
This gesture has been made possible for the second year in succession by the anonymous donors at the parish church of María Reina de los Corazones, in the Santa Ana residential area in the outskirts of Cartagena and the collection and delivery of the food was planned and executed, unsurprisingly, with military precision. It has now been delivered to Cáritas for distribution among those in need in Caravaca.
Members of the FGNE force walked from their base in La Algameca, just outside the city of Cartagena, to the basilica of Caravaca de la Cruz over a period of 30 hours, most of it in darkness, with each man carrying 10 kilos of food in his backpack as well as his kit. This reflects the spirit of the unit known as the Green Berets: when awarded the beret by the Navy each new member of the FGNE accepts the need for self-sacrifice and renounces any personal ambition to focus exclusively on the needs of the group.
