ARCHIVED - Muslims in Cartagena donate food to those in need during the coronavirus emergency
6,000 euros’ worth of food have been donated as a gesture of solidarity
A crisis always brings out the best and the worst in humanity and during the last few weeks many businesses and communities have joined together to make donations to the various bodies working to support vulnerable members of society through this crisis.
The six established Muslim communities in the municipality of Cartagena have joined forces, according to a Town Hall press release issued on Thursday, to make a donation of food worth 6,000 euros for distribution among those in need during the Covid-19 emergency.
Uniting under the slogan “Solidaridad y convivencia” (solidarity and co-existence), the communities expressing their thanks to all of the relevant authorities during the current lockdown are those of “Iman Malek” in Los Dolores, “Qobaa” in the Barrio Peral district, El Albujon, the Virgen de la Caridad, San Antón and the “Ibrahim” in San Antón. Offering their help to those in need in the community as a whole, they explain that they want to contribute their “grain of sand” to the efforts to support those who most need it, according to Walid Habbal Turk, speaking as representative of the Islamic Communities of the Region of Murcia.
The foodstuffs – mainly sugar, oil, milk, flour, fruit juice and vegetables - were delivered on Thursday morning to the Pabellón Wssell de Guimbarda, a gesture which was welcomed by Mayoress Ana Belén Castejón.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
