ARCHIVED - Foreign buyers account for 18 per cent of all property sales in Murcia
The attractions of the Costa Cálida continue to interest non-Spanish purchasers
Despite the decimation of international travel since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic early in 2020 the residential property market of the Region of Murcia has continued to attract large numbers of non-Spanish buyers, with foreign purchasers accounting for 18.1 per cent of all transactions during the first three months of this year.
This is the fourth highest proportion among Spain’s tourist regions, behind only the Balearic and Canary Islands (24.3 per cent and 21.2 per cent respectively) and the Comunidad Valenciana, where the high concentration of non-Spaniards living in the Costa Blanca pushes the regional average up to 19.4 per cent.
Throughout Spain the most numerous foreign buyers are those of British nationality, accounting for 12.1 of non-Spaniards acquiring a home in this country, followed by those from Morocco (8.7 per cent), France (8.2 per cent), 8,7%), Germany (7.1 per cent), Belgium (6.5 per cent) and Romania (5.9 per cent)
The figures published by Spain’s property registrars also report that in the Murcia only 17.4 per cent of the homes purchased between January and March were new builds, as opposed to almost 22 per cent in the country as a whole, while the proportion of sales accounted for by detached properties continues to be significantly higher than before the start of the first pandemic lockdown at 21 per cent in the whole of Spain and 22.4 per cent in the Region.
