ARCHIVED - Covid cases Spain Weds. 24th June; cases in Spain nearly double in last 24 hours
Spain reports two deaths in the last 24 hours and new infections are almost double compared to Tuesday
The Ministry of Health has published its daily bulletin relating to the development of the covid pandemic in Spain, reporting two deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 28,327.
According to the figures published this Wednesday, 10 people have died in Spain with coronavirus in the last seven days.
By autonomous communities, Andalusia has registered one death in the last week, Aragon one, Castile and Leon five, Valencian Community one, Madrid one and the Basque Country one.
Numbers of new cases
This is the most worrying figure as it charts the number of new infections registered daily and where they are.
The figures published on Wednesday were almost double compared to those published on Tuesday: on Tuesday 108 new cases were reported, whereas on Wednesday there are 196 new cases, bringing the total figure to 247,086.
In the past two weeks, 732 people have shown Covid symptoms, 254 in the past seven days.
Of the 196 new positives, the largest number relates to Aragón, where an outbreak in an agricultural plant has resulted in four comarcas returning to phase 2 of the de-escalation process.
19 have been located in Andalusia, 49 in Aragon, six in the Canary Islands, two in Cantabria, 13 in Castilla y León, 28 in Catalonia, one in Ceuta, three in the Valencian Community, six in Extremadura, three in Galicia, 50 in Madrid, one in Murcia, 11 in Navarra and four in the Basque Country. Castilla-La Mancha has not updated its data "due to technical problems", according to the Ministry.
The new outbreaks, of which there are now 36, are mainly in nursing homes, hospitals and fruit and vegetable farms or are imported cases. (see: 2 US residents become first new cases in Menorca for 48 days)
The Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa warned today in the Congress of Deputies (the lower house, equivalent to the Commons) that coronavirus could “return to strike Spain again,” emphasising the need to “remain prudent” as “nobody can guarantee zero risk.”
After running through all of the steps taken by the Government to control the virus to date, he reported that the state is preparing a “national preparation and response plan” to cope with a second wave, focusing on early detection and monitoring.
The minister recognised that the current acceleration of new cases “was worrying” but also reiterated that, “we now know so much more about the virus than we knew months ago, although there is still a considerable deal more to learn”.
“I can assure you, we’re not going to lower our guard, “ he said.
