ARCHIVED - Cartagena UPCT student develops interactive robot to keep elderly people company
The aim is to reduce loneliness and combat the onset of neuro-degenerative illnesses
A student at the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT), José Antonio Jiménez Viuda, has received widespread plaudits for a robot he has developed with the aim of helping elderly people who live on their own by providing them with company and thus helping toward off neuro-degenerative illnesses.
In appearance the robot, named Lola, is similar to a music speaker, but she responds to questions using natural speech patterns, expresses emotion through expressions shown on a screen and can even contact the emergency services if asked to do so by her human companion. In addition, she can play music and remind people of medical appointments or the need to take medication.
In creating Lola José Antonio Jiménez consulted elderly people in order to identify their communicative needs, and the result is in some ways similar to the voice assistants created by Google, Apple and Amazon. But José Antonio Jiménez takes the concept a step further by tailoring his design to cater for the specific problem of loneliness among elderly people, and his design can be built at a cost of only around 100 euros by creating the parts through a 3-d scanner and printer in under 11 hours. Essentially he has taken on board ideas which are already becoming a reality in Japan and adapted them to the needs of the elderly in Spain, bearing in mind their preferences even in the physical design of Lola.
Communication with Lola is initiated by the simple phrase “Hola Lola” and no internet connection is needed, and it is anticipated that she could be developed to act as a tool in diagnosing incipient mental illness and neuro-degeneration.
