ARCHIVED - Cartagena Town Hall responds quickly after building collapses in the city centre
None injured but Calle Cuatro Santos remains closed off to pedestrians
The Town Hall of Cartagena has acted quickly to shore up a building in Calle Cuatro Santos, in the narrow streets of the historic city centre, after one of the walls collapsed on Sunday, and at the same time procedures have been set in motion to declare the building to be under imminent threat of ruin in order to demolish the rest of the structure.
The building is listed, presenting administrative difficulties, and in addition, as it is in the immediate vicinity of the Roman Theatre Museum, approval for the demolition has to be given by the regional ministry of Culture. In the meantime, therefore, steps have been taken to prevent the immediate collapse of any more of the structure, while both Calle del Aire and Calle Cuatro Santos remain cordoned off and neighbours of the building in question have been advised to stay with friends and relatives until the area is declared risk-free.
It was at approximately 19.00 on Sunday that the wide wall of the unoccupied building abruptly fell away, fortunately causing no injuries.
