ARCHIVED - 35 Algerian migrants detained after reaching the Murcia coastline
9 of the migrants were found hiding in the tomato plantations of La Azohía
With sea conditions remaining calm in the Mediterranean at the end of October the flow of unauthorized migrants making their way from northern Africa to the southern coasts of Spain continues, and on Thursday, 35 more were intercepted by the Guardia Civil after arriving on the coastline of the Region of Murcia in four small boats.
The first boat was spotted early in the morning 9.5 miles south-east of Monte de las Cenizas in the municipality of Cartagena with five people on board, and at approximately 7.00 in the morning 9 more people were found hiding in the tomato plantations between La Azohía and Isla Plana. They were rounded up and taken into custody alongside the main road between the two villages.
A couple of hours later another 9 men were found at the beach of Cala del Pino in Águilas, and during the afternoon a fourth group consisting of 12 people were intercepted on a small boat 8 miles off Cabo de Palos.
All of those taken into custody are Algerian adult males and appear to have arrived in Spain in good health. The immigrants were taken to the facilities in the port of Escombreras operated by Cruz Roja for Covid-19 testing.
