ARCHIVED - 200 new trees planted in the streets of Cartagena
Climate change mitigation combines with urban renovation in numerous districts in the city
In the face of the climate emergency one of the small actions which can contribute to mitigating the effects of the alteration in weather patterns is to plant more trees, and Cartagena Town Hall are doing their bit with a program to add more greenery in various districts of the city.
By early March another 200 or so trees will have been planted in the city centre and in the districts of Santa Lucía, Los Barreros, Los Dolores, Barriada San Ginés, El Ensanche and Ciudad Jardín. Most of these are replacing trees which have suffered damage, although councillor Juan Pedro Torralba explains that he is unwilling to authorize the mass planting of thousands of trees unless he is certain that resources are available to look after them properly in the future.
The same considerations explain the fact that in many cases ficus and other trees are being replaced with bushes and vegetation which are better adapted to the climate of Cartagena and to the space available for them to grow, and Sr Torralba also calls upon residents and local businesses to help look after the trees by refraining from emptying bottles on them and reporting any instances of vandalism.
