Startling images of the divide between northern Africa and southern Europe at the Luzzy cultural centre in Cartagena

The image above is a remarkable prize-winning photograph entitled “Paisajes de desolación” (landscapes of desolation) which has been published and praised all over the world, showing the inequality at the southern borders of the EU through a shot taken at the golf course of Melilla, one of two Spanish enclaves on the north African coast.

The well-heeled Europeans can be seen on the immaculate fairway of the course while behind them desperate African migrants cling to the top of the barbed wire fence which separates them from EU territory, and the man responsible for this image, José Palazón, is one of two photographers exhibiting at the Centro Cultural Ramón Alonso Luzzy in Cartagena until 14th February. The other is Paloma Comuñas, and in their exhibition “Campos, Muros y Encrucijadas” both seek to illustrate the social and economic tensions which divide northern Africa from Europe despite their close proximity.

The exhibition at the Luzzy in Cartagena can be visited on weekdays between 9.00 and 21.00.
