Almost 100 sporting activities in and around Yecla at the first event of its kind in the municipality

April 22 to 28 Sporting Tourism week in Yecla A new initiative has been launched by the Town Hall of Yecla in northern Murcia to promote sporting and adventure tourism activity in the area, with a series of events taking place during the week of April 22 to 28.

Councillors Isabel Pérez and Antonio Martínez officially presented the program in the company of two natives of Yecla who have represented Spain in the Olympic Games, boxer José Ortega Chumilla and tennis player María José Martínez, and explained that the attractions of active tourism in Yecla are complementary to those of the town’s cultural life, its wine, its cuisine and its historical and architectural heritage.

Over the course of the seven days as many as 90 activities are being held by local sports clubs, gymnasia and others, with star guests including those mentioned above and Eva Navarro, a member of the world champion Spanish women’s football team, and Chuso García Bragado, 13 times world race walking champion.

Among the highlights are a pole dance and boxing exhibition on April 23, the screening of a film about sport in Yecla called “Voces yeclanas, una historia sobre el patrimonio humano de Yecla” on April 24 as well as a Sporting Tourism gala on April 26 and a closing ceremony on Sunday April 28. In the meantime, other activities include open days at the municipal indoor swimming pool, numerous health and fitness sessions for all ages, the 2^nd Women’s Tennis Open, street tennis in the town centre and football, basketball and volleyball masterclasses.

At the same time a variety of guided tours are being held in the town, all of which will appear in the What’s On section of Yecla Today shortly!

Yecla Tourist Office Yecla is a large municipality in the north of the Region of Murcia, home to just under 35,000 people, and these days is best known for its wines, which enjoy Denomination of Origin status, and its furniture production, which has its origins in the abundance of pine trees on the mountainsides and the high plateaux.

Yecla Tourist Office While visitors in the 21st century may be attracted primarily by wine tourism, the town (or city, as it was proclaimed in 1878) also has a wide historical, cultural and natural heritage, and an identity quite different from the coastal areas of the Region of Murcia. For this reason it is often grouped together with its neighbour and fellow wine-producing area Jumilla as part of the Altiplano area.

Yecla borders with Castilla-La Mancha and the Region of Valencia and is closer to Alicante coastal areas than much of Murcia. These visitors come to see the historic old town itself - an atmospheric and interesting place, crammed full of history - the natural beauty of Monte Arabí, with stunning views for those who enjoy the outdoors, the gastonomy and of course the wine route.

Yecla Tourist Office Yecla boasts cave paintings from 10,000 years ago in Monte Arabí, a Bronze Age settlement at El Arabilejo, Iberian remains in El Pulpillo and a Roman administrative centre at Los Torrejones as well as the remnants of the 11th century Moorish castle on the hill behind the town. More modern (and complete) testimony to the past are the buildings in the town centre, which include the grandiose Basílica de la Purísima, with its striking blue dome, the archaeological museum and the attractive Plaza Mayor, where the 16th century Town Hall stands alongside the Renaissance Casa de los Alarcos, the clock tower and the old grain store.
