Another major supermarket eyes Cabo de Palos location

New businesses are lining up for a spot in the Los Dunas commercial centre

A second supermarket could soon be heading to Cabo de Palos, adding to the wave of commercial development already transforming the Las Dunas shopping centre.

The possibility was confirmed this week by Cartagena's Councillor for Urban Planning, Diego Ortega, during a visit to the newly built Mercadona store alongside Mayor Noelia Arroyo.

According to Mr Ortega, another supermarket chain has expressed interest in opening a store in the commercial centre, although no details have yet been released about which company could be behind the proposal.

The announcement comes as work continues on several other projects nearby. Construction crews are already busy on a new BP service station and a Burger King, both of which are being built close to the recently completed Mercadona.

Council officials explained that progress on the site has only been possible after long-standing planning issues affecting plots of land to the west of the shopping centre were finally resolved. Those parcels had remained undeveloped for years before the latest round of investment began.

As the area expands, local authorities have also been trying to prepare the road network for an increase in visitors. A new roundabout has been installed to improve traffic flow around the commercial centre, particularly during the busy summer season when Cabo de Palos sees a major influx of tourists and day-trippers.

Even so, traffic remains a concern for many residents. Some fear the arrival of several new businesses, combined with the popularity of the large new Mercadona store, could lead to congestion during peak periods.

Mercadona has previously stated that it worked closely with Cartagena City Council throughout the planning process to ensure access and mobility arrangements were properly integrated into the surrounding area.

Despite those efforts, some residents have already reported drivers ignoring recently installed traffic signs near the development, raising concerns that the area's road network could face additional pressure once all the new businesses are open.
