ARCHIVED - Alicante shop sparks controversy with discounts for vaccinated customers only
A clothes shop in Alicante city centre has slashed prices by 15%, but only for shoppers who can prove they are fully immunised
Controversy surrounding the possible implementation of a Covid passport scheme has hit Alicante where a clothes shop is offering a 15% discount to shoppers who can prove they have been double-jabbed.
A sign next to the front door of Tendencias fashion outlet in the city centre reads: “From 21/9 to 8/10 15% off the entire new collection just by showing your Covid vaccination card.”
The business has shared the promotion on its Facebook and Instagram pages, sparking outrage from many on social media networks, with one tweeter posting a video of the shopfront, captioned: “This store only offers a discount for the inoculated. They should be reported.”

The post has been shared more than 200 times, prompting dozens of comments, and 230 likes.
However, not everybody has slammed the shop, with one social media user pointing out that, “just as you have the freedom to get vaccinated, others are free to offer discounts”.
Shop owner, Amparo Mira, has since been forced to explain the devastating reason behind her controversial decision.
She said she came up with the promotion after watching a news item on TV about anti-vaxxers.
“My mother died of Covid in January, a month before she was due to be vaccinated, so this kind of news outrages me.”
And whilst Mira accepts the decision has led to criticism and insults on social media, she is grateful to the many other people who have thanked her in person.
“Doctors have come to the shop to thank me and that moves me,” added Mira.
Covid passports could become a requirement to enter bars, restaurants, and other establishments in the Valencia region, and the government is currently in talks with the sectors most likely to be effected, stressing that “vaccination certificates are a good option to guarantee public safety”.
