ARCHIVED - Alfaz del Pi International Day: October 17
Fifty foreign residents' groups and associations will take part in the 14th international event in the Marina Baixa, Alicante
More than 50% of the population in Alfaz del Pi are foreigners (around 10,000 people), and to celebrate its wealth of cultures, the municipality launched International Day in 2007, a festive and cultural initiative pioneer in the Marina Baixa, in collaboration with numerous associations and groups of expat residents.
As such, expats play a leading role in the annual event on Sunday October 17, sharing their customs and heritage in an "enriching exchange", explained residents' councillor, Martine Mertens, "to promote coexistence and integration of residents of approximately 100 different nationalities.
This year's celebration will be "a simple one due to Covid", which means there won't be the usual food stalls and other activities, but the line-up still includes a series of music and dance performances by foreign residents, "to get to know the rich folklore of their countries of origin".
The event is being staged on a limited invitation-only basis, "in the hope that we can return in 2022 to celebrate International Day as we did before the pandemic, when this particular event brought together thousands of people," added the residents' councillor.
