ARCHIVED - Air quality alert in Murcia as 12 face fines for lighting bonfires and burning cuttings
The lighting of bonfires to burn garden waste requires a licence from the regional government
As often happens in the city of Murcia the stable, cold weather which settled over the regional capital during the weekend brought with it a significant decrease in air quality, with the Town Hall putting into place a level 2 alert for contamination (which has now been lifted), and while the main causes are doubtless the exhaust fumes and industrial smoke which are inevitable in the seventh largest city in Spain the contribution of people burning tree cuttings and other gardening waste should not be underestimated.
During the weekend the “ecological patrol” of the Policía Local initiated proceedings against 12 people who were found to be lighting bonfires to dispose of such rubbish without the required authorization, highlighting once again a law of which many expats living in the Costa Cálida are unaware. The legislation states that the burning of garden waste and cuttings is not permitted without a licence issued by the relevant department of the regional government, and while agriculturalists are generally those most likely to transgress in this respect anyone who has a garden runs the risk of a nasty fine if caught burning cuttings.
To mitigate this the Town Hall of Murcia offers a free service by which tree cuttings are taken away and shredded or chipped for use in creating compost. This alternative to bonfires is currently in its first year of operation and it is hoped that more and more fruit growers and gardeners in the “huerta” around Murcia will avail themselves of it, but clearly the 12 people found to be breaking the rules at the weekend were either unaware of its existence or unwilling to make use of it.
The shredding service can be contacted by telephone on 968 284188 or by email at info@asajamurcia.com.
