After the completion of the first phase of this project, the municipal archaeologist assured that the findings have exceeded all expectations, highlighting the róle of the island during an extended period.
“An Islamic necropolis has been found, as well as numerous Roman buildings in an exceptional state of preservation," Hernández said.
“A late-period warehouse made up of amphoras originating from North Africa, some of which contained fish remains, has been documented. The discovery - the archaeologist continued - seems to confirm the hypothesis that fishing products were produced and marketed on the island during Antiquity, being an active point of exchange with the rest of the Mediterranean ”.
By this, he is referring to the typical pungent salt fish sauces produced along the Murcian coastline both preceding and during the Roman occupation, which were produced here and then exported throughout the Mediterranean basin.
The council is working on a long-term plan to fully understand the history of the island and create a site which can be visited by tourists in the future. The island is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest and lies just off the main coastline in the bay of El Hornillo.
Remains from this period, including amphorae which would once have been used in the transport of salted fish, can be found in the municipal Archaeological Museum which is actively involved in this project.
