ARCHIVED - Agreement to excavate original entrance portico of the Roman Theatre in Cartagena
The aim of the project is to excavate and extend the area visitable
After opening in 2008 the Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena has become the most visited museum in the Region of Murcia, and next year there are plans to continue expanding and improving it with the restoration of the original portico through which spectators and audiences would have entered two millennia ago.
The theatre, built at around the time of the birth of Christ, was accidentally discovered in 1988 and more facets of the original structure are still coming to light. One of these is the portico, located under the ground alongside Calle de la Sociedad, and plans for its excavation and restoration were officially presented on Wednesday by Elena Ruiz, the director of the museum, with the ministry of Culture in the regional government of Murcia having guaranteed the funds needed to initiate the project.
The first of three phases of work will focus on the land by the corner of Calle de la Soledad and Calle Cuesta de la Baronesa and is budgeted to cost 734,000 euros. This is the location of the western end of the portico, and preliminary digs have shown a magnificent columned façade dating from the middle of the 1st century BC, along with rich decoration on the inside.
This area is currently an ugly patch of abandoned land which can be seen from within the theatre and contains building rubble, pieces of stone, earth and weeds.
The portico restoration project has been delayed for the last few years for financial reasons, among them the need to pay back the loans taken out to excavate the stage and stands of the theatre and to create the entrance to the museum from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. In 2017 the regional government funded the drawing up of the excavation project to the tune of 17,000 euros and last year a further 400,000 euros were promised for the first phase of work, but now it has been decided to undertake a more expensive project so that an access ramp can be created leading to the investigation and research zones of the site and in order to add 40 square metres more to the actual dig.
