ARCHIVED - Access improvement work continues at Playa Amarilla in Águilas
One of the most attractive beaches in the Costa Cálida is opposite the Isla Del Fraile
Work continues in the municipality of Águilas to improve access to the beach known as Playa Amarilla, on the headland opposite Isla del Fraile to the east of the town centre, making one of the most attractive locations on the long coastline of the municipality less difficult to reach despite its slightly isolated location.
The work consists of the construction and installation of stone staircase with wooden handrails leading down to the sand, and while the structure of course has to be protected against the effects of the sun, sea and salt on the coast, care is also being taken to minimize the visual impact on the highly picturesque location.
Among the 36 beaches in Águilas Playa Amarilla was, until recently, one of the least commonly visited due to it being hard to reach along rough tracks from the main road towards Calabardina or the Playa del Hornillo, but this changed a little due to the construction of a mountain road as part of the Isla del Fraile resort development. It is now relatively easy to drive to within a few metres of the sand, and there is plenty of parking on the road down to the shore. However, those few metres still present difficulties for those of limited mobility or to families intending to take sunshades, tables and picnics down to the shore, and the new staircase will ease those difficulties considerably.
Part of the attraction of Playa Amarilla is that the small headland almost joins up with the Isla del Fraile just 50 metres away. This makes it popular with snorkelers crossing to the island, where the remains of an old fish salting factory still stand. However, this stretch of water can become dangerous when the currents are strong, and it should be pointed out there is no lifeguard service at Playa Amarilla.
It is still fair to classify Playa Amarilla as a "wild" beach, with none of the facilities of its in-town counterparts, but little by little that is changing and it will be interesting to see any further developments in the future.
