ARCHIVED - 80 covid tracers from the Navy and Air Force join tracing efforts in the Murcia Region
The 80 personnel substitute the Army tracers who have been working from Valencia for the last two weeks
Eighty covid trackers from the Armed Forces have now joined the tracers employed directly by the Ministry of Health in order to help the regional government identify the location of covid positivies and test their close contacts.
This Wednesday the 30 trackers from the Third Battalion of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) working from Bétera (Valencia) that have supported the Ministry of Health in the last two weeks, ceded their task to 80 Air Force and Navy trackers based in San Javier, Alcantarilla and Cartagena.
The Armed Forces began training the Air Force and navy personnel based in the region on September 10th. The Region currently has 320 of its own trackers, although many of these work in other positions within the health service and only part of their time is allocated to tracing and follow-up work, hence the need for the military support.
The regional government is currently trialling the new antigen testers in the region and continues to install covid testing points to try and speed up the detection of new cases; yesterday a new point was installed in Lorca, one of the municipalities worst affected by the pandemic.
One illustration of how succesful pre-testing can help to reduce deaths is the policy of pre-testing staff working in residencias and centres for young people in the region when they return from a holiday or break from work; since this programme began after the summer holidays, 39 workers in 29 care homes and related dependencies working with the disabled and young people have been found to be positive and quarantined to prevent them having contact with clients and potentially infecting them.
1640 tests have been carried out, 31 of which related to workers in 22 care homes for the elderly.
Yesterday the region detected 474 new cases and reported two fatalities.
