ARCHIVED - 7-day incidence rate drops for third consecutive day: Murcia Covid update January 21
A 31-year-old from the Region of Murcia has died from coronavirus
Although the number of new Covid cases has remained stable and active cases are decreasing, the update today, Friday January 21, brought the unfortunate news that a further eight people have lost their lives to the virus in the Region of Murcia, including one person as young as 31.
On a national level, the slight but continued decreases in Covid indicators are a solid sign that the sixth wave could be coming to an end. However, Murcia’s cumulative incidence rate is still almost 2,000 points higher than the average in Spain.
New cases
New cases remain around the 5,000 mark, with 5,492 positive diagnoses in the past 24 hours, of which 1,605 were in the municipality of Murcia and 792 were in Cartagena. The remaining municipalities have reported fewer than 500 new cases each.
Active cases
This Covid indicator has been decreasing for the past week and has now dropped to 42,150 – 485 fewer than in Thursday’s update.
Hospitalisations
The number of Covid patients in the Region’s hospitals has risen to 630 with 17 new admissions in the past day. Meanwhile, there is one more patient in intensive care: 77 in total.
Fatalities
Eight Covid-related deaths in the past 24 hours bring the total number of fatalities to 1,923. The deceased are five men and three women aged 31, 58, 62, 71, 72, 80, 88 and 91 from Health Areas I (East Murcia), II (Cartagena), III (Lorca) and IV (Northeast).
Incidence rate
The cumulative incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants in the past two weeks is 5,399.4, according to the latest update released by Murcia Salud; an increase of over 200 points in one day. Meanwhile, the 7-day rate has entered its third day of decreases and now stands at 2,550.8 cases per 100,000 residents.
Vaccines
As of January 21, 2,900,168 Covid vaccines have been administered in the Region, 18,214 in the past day. While 99.05% of the target population has had at least one vaccine, only 86.33% of people in Murcia have been double-jabbed and, according to recent data, 42% of the population aged between 50 and 59 have yet to get their booster jab.
